Bermondsey region where many design agencies are located. Old and new buildings are mixed up there and harmonious with each other.

I passed by a design agency under whose name on the window the word, chartered designers is. Chartered designers? It sounds a bit weird to me: imagine this, chartered artists. How can designers be chartered and in what criteria? It doesn't make sense to me. It might imply how well UK has politically got mileage out of design. Mean UK where designers are not well educated but mass produced!

On the street big steel bells were lied, which seem like a boundary stone to show the border of their administrative district. But I have no idea what role it plays. The bases where trees lining in the street stand were filled with tiny pebbles and they were tighthly glued each other. Because the base is usually filled with soil and caved in, people can't walk through it and so the area is of no use from user's perspective. However, this design allows the deserted area to become a useful place to people. Taking cleaning, dust and so on into account, this solution seems a very good idea.

What I liked in London was cafes with cozy interior and exterior. Unusually, a signboard for the name of the cafe is made of a blackboard and its name was written down on the board with a chalk. I like its designer's creativity exploring a broad range of possibilities.   

Bermondsey에는 디자인에이전시들이 많이 있다. 그런 분위기에 어울리게 오래된 건물과 새 빌딩들이 섞여 조화롭게 어우러져있다.

이 곳을 둘러보다 우연히 한 디자인에이전시의 창문에 적힌 상호을 본다. 회사 상호 아래에 '공인된 디자이너'라는 말이 적혀있다. 공인된 디자이너? 이상하게 들린다. 마치 공인된 예술가처럼... 디자인이나 예술이 어떻게 공인될 수 있나? 있다면 어떤 기준으로? 말이 안되는 것 같다. 이 경우를 보면서, 얼마나 영국이라는 나라가 정치적으로 디자인을 잘 이용해먹는지 알 수 있을 것 같다. 사악한 영국, 디자인너를 잘 교육시키기 보다 상업화에 맞게 대량 생산하는....

이 지역에는 특이하게 큰 철로 된 종들이 길들에 놓여있다. 주차방지라고 보기엔 위치가 너무 한쪽으로 몰려있다. 행정구역의 경계를 나타내는 것일 꺼라는 추측만 할 뿐, 사실 정확한 용도는 아직도 모르겠다. 다른 특이한 사항은, 보통은 가로수 바닥이 움푹들어가고 흙으로 채워져 있어 사용자의 관점에서는 걸을 수 없는 버려진 면적인데 반해, 이 곳의 가로수들의 바닥은 작은 자갈들이 접착제 같은 걸로 서로 튼튼하게 붙어 있어서 사람이 사용할 수 있는 면적으로 다시 환원된다는 것이다. 청소, 먼지 기타 등등의 사항들을 고려했을 때, 참신한 아이디어이다.

런던에 가면 항상 편안하고 기분 좋은 카페의 인테리어 익스테리어에 반한다. 특이하게 이 카페는 카페 이름을 표시하는 사인보드로서 칠판을 적용, 상호가 분필로 적혀 있다. 많은 가능성들을 이용한 디자이너의 창조성에 찬사를 보낸다.
