I planned to take a rest at home all day long this morning because it was Sunday. However, I was in the centre of The Hague this afternoon because of warm weather. I planned to wander from place to place on the way there on a tram. But I spent all afternoon at two bookshops after all: one is a Dutch bookshop where many books are on discount and the other is the American bookshop where books written in English only are being sold.

I bought 5 books at the former with less than a half price. Taking it into account that books on design are very expensive, the deals were very satisfying to me. The books are about packaging design, 1000 lights, the history of glasses and sun glasses and compact living, which have been interesting to me. Meanwhile, I think it is very necessary to study and understand the history of the product when a designer creates a product. In that sense, I much like the book, Brillen (which means glasses in Dutch). Since I lived in a very tiny normal Dutch house, I have become concerned about how to use a small space in effective ways. The book, compact living, gives me some tips on that with dandy pictures. Feeling the happiness to have them and at the same time heaviness because of the thick five books, I was going to take a tram for home.

By accident, I saw the American bookshop on the way. How can a sparrow pass by a mill? There were a plenty of books in English. I became happy again. You know how it is gloomy to live in a county where its language is neither English nor my mother tongue. I feel here as if English were my mother tongue. Anyway, I would buy hundreds of books there if I had had enough money on my bank account. Put pressure on customers' interest, I had to be satisfied with buying the book, Asian vegetarian recipes. But I was happy because cooking is another happiness here together with drinking. Today was very productive in the sense that I would be stuck at a dark room unless I had went out.

일요일이란 이유로 오전에 하루 종일 집에서 쉴 계획을 했으나 화창한 날씨로 인해 오후에 나는 헤이그 시내로 몸을 옮겼다. 이곳 저곳 돌아다니며 구경을 할 요량이었는데, 결국 나는 모든 오후를 서점 두 곳에서 보냈다. 한 곳은 세일을 자주하고 중고서적도 파는 네덜란드 서점과 다른 한 곳은 미국 서적만을 파는 혹은 영어로 된 책만 파는 아메리칸 서점이다.

나는 네덜란드 서점에서 5권의 책을 샀다. 일반적으로 디자인 서적은 무척 비싸기 때문에, 반값보다 더 저렴한 가격으로 그 책들을 샀다는 것은 정말 만족스러운 거래다. 포장 디자인, 1000가지 조명 모델들, 안경과 선글라스의 역사,  compact living들에 관한 책들이다. 내가 디자인을 공부하면서 느낀 것은 제품의 역사(변천사)를 모르고 그 제품을 디자인하는 것은 디자인이 아니라는 것이다. 그런 의미에서 안경과 선글라스에 대한 책은 많은 사진들로 그들의 역사를 보여주고 있어 그 책을 소유함에 기쁘다. 물론 내용을 소유하고 소화하는 것이 더욱 중요하겠지만. 그리고 그 동안 아주 좁은 전통적인 네덜란드 주택에 살면서 좁은 공간의 효율적 활용에 관심이 아주 많아졌다. compact living, 이 책은 멋진 인테리어 사진들로 나의 관심에 작은 tip들을 제공하고 있다. 좋은 가격에 좋은 책들을 샀다는 행복감과 그 책들로 인한 무거움을 한꺼번에 느끼며, 집으로 가는 트램 정거장으로 향하고 있었다.

그런데, 가는 길에 우연히 아메리칸서점을 발견했다. 참새가 어떻게 방앗간을 그냥 지나칠 수 있을까? 그 곳에는 어마어마한 양의 영어로 된 책들이 있었다. 다시 행복해지기 시작했다. 영어도 한국어도 공용어가 아닌 나라에서 산다는 것이 가끔은 얼마나 우울한 일인지 알시는지? 나는 영어가 이 곳에서는 모국어처럼 느껴진다. 다행이 내가 돈이 없었기 망정이지 아마도 돈이 많았다면 수백권을 샀을꺼다. 구매욕을 누르고 억누르며, 한권의 책에 만족해야 했다. 아시아 채식주의자를 위한 요리법. 요리를 한다는 것은 술을 마시는 것과 함께 이곳에서의 기쁨 중에 하나이기에. 여튼 오늘 하루 집에 박혀있는 것보다는 휠씬 휠씬 생산적인 일요일이었다.
