When I was little, filling water with sugar in an ice cream mold, putting it in the fridge and waiting until it is done were a sort of fun we could enjoy at home. Since I grew up, I have not been a big fan of ice cream making anymore. However, the mold can do something useful to us. It turns to be a desk organizer with which you can put pencils and other stationery stuff in order. You can easily organize writing supplies because it has four separate holes.

어렸을적 아이스크림 몰드에 설탕물을 채우고 냉장고에 넣고 얼때까지 기다리던 그것은 그 시절에 집에서 즐길 수 있는 것들 중의 하나였다. 어른이 되어버린 이후, 더 이상 이것을 즐길 일이 없어졌다. 그래도 그 아이스크림 몰드는 여전히 쓸모가 있는 녀석이다. 책상 위 연필꽂이로의 변신. 연필이며 기타 문구루들을 깔끔하게 정리할 수 있다. 이 녀석 4개의 분리된 구멍들을 가지고 있어서 문구류에 따라 쉽게 분류 정리할 수 있다.

A group of students handed in a report like this in the picture. It seems that they were in a hurry and was not able to find a stapler. Anyway, this way worked. The pages didn't scatter until I finished going through it. Post-it bookmarking turns out to be able to hold papers. This lousy binding didn't influence their mark thanks to their creativity like this.

한 학생들 그룹은 사진에서와 같이 리포트를 제출했다. 그 친구들 많이 바빴나보다 그래서 스테이플러를 못 찾았나보다. 어쨌든 이 제본 방식 효과가 있더라. 내가 리포트를 다 훑어볼때까지 페이지들이 따로 놀지 않더라. 포스티잇 북마킹은 본래의 기능에다가 스테이플러와 같이 종이들을 붙잡을 수도 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 이 불성실(?)한 제본에도 불구하고 그 학생들의 창의력때문에 감점은 가해지지 않았다.

A fish market at the east coast in South Korea was crowded with tourists. An interesting trash bin design I found here. It was made of a unused fish trap: there are some similarities between trash bin and fish trap in terms of shape and function. Both usually have a round shape. Their function is actually the same because both are used in collecting and holding things. This fish trap trash bin is quite a cool design in a sense that unused materials can be reused and also it represents the identity of fishing villages well.

남한 동해안에 있는 어느 어시장은 관광객들로 붐볐다. 여기서 흥미로운 휴지통 디자인을 발견했다. 이 녀석은 사용되지 않는 통발로 만들어졌다. 사실 쓰레기통과 통발 사이에는 형태와 기능의 측면에서 몇가지 유사점들을 가지고 있다. 즉 둘다 보통 둥글고 그것들의 기능도 사실 같다. 즉 둘다 어떤 것을 모으고 붙잡고 있다. 이 통발 쓰레기통은 폐자원의 재활용 측면에서 그리고 어촌의 아이덴티티를 잘 살려준다는 의미에서 아주 멋진 디자인이다.

Snack stalls are popular in South Korea. You can easily see them standing in a row on busy streets. The owners do not get enough water and there is no place to wash bowls and dishes because their business is done on the street. Thanks to these kinds of barriers, they worked out a way to keep their bowls and dishes clean with vinyl bags. With a vinyl bag, there is no direct contact between snack and a bowl and thus, there is no reason the bowl gets dirty. By just replacing the used vinyl with a new one, they can serve snack to their customers without the need of washing the bowl and on a clean bowl. A vinyl bag is used in a different purpose: not putting something in but cover something over.

포장마차는 한국에서 대중적이다. 붐비는 거리들에 가보면 어김없이 쭉 늘어선 포장마차들을 쉽게 볼 수 있다. 포장마차 업주들은 길에서 비지니스를 하다보니 충분한 물은 구하기가 힘들고 그릇이나 접시들을 씻을 만한 장소도 마땅치 않다. 이러한 한계들 덕분에 업주분들은 그들의 그릇과 접시들을 비닐봉지로 깨끗히 유지하는 방법을 고안해냈다. 한장의 비닐봉지로 분식과 그릇사이에 직접적인 접촉이 없어지고 따라서 그 그릇이 더러워질 염려도 없다. 사용된 비닐봉지를 새걸로 교체함으로써 업주분들은 그들의 고객들에게 그릇을 씻을 필요없이 항상 깨끗한 그릇에 먹거리를 제공할 수 있다. 비닐 봉지가 다른 용도로 사용되고 있는 것이다. 본래의 목적인 무엇을 담는 것이 아닌 어떤 것을 덮는 용도로...
