To design innovative products and services, designers need deep insights in the user experiences: emotion, the situation of product use, and social and cultural influences. Within the field of participatory design, a number of techniques have emerged to explore and 'map out' contexts of product use. In this sense, Contextmapping is a procedure which includes several research techniques such as generative techniques (Sanders, 2002), cultural probes (Gaver, 1999), maketools (Sanders, 2002: e.g. a collage).
혁신적인 제품과 서비스를 디자인하기위해 디자이너들은 사용자의 경험에 관한 깊은 통찰력이 필요하다: 즉, 감정, 제품사용의 상황, 그리고 사회적 문화적 영향 등에 대한 통찰력을 말함. 사용자 참여 디자인의 영역에서는 제품 사용의 컨텍스트을 매핑하고 탐험하기 위한 많은 기법들이 만들어졌왔다. 이러한 의미에서 컨텍스트매핑은 생성기법 (샌더스, 2002), 컬츄럴프로브 (가버, 1999), 만들기툴 (샌더스, 2002: 예로 꼴라주가 있다)과 같은 여러 연구 기법들을 포함하는 일련의 과정이다.
Contextmapping is a procedure for conducting contextual research with users, where tacit knowledge is gained about the context of use of products. It aims to inform and inspire design teams, where users and stakeholders actively participate in the design process to ensure a good fit between the design and the use of a product.
컨텍스트매핑은 사용자들과 컨텍스에 관한 연구를 진행하는 과정으로써, 제품 사용의 컨텍스트에 관한 무언의 내재된 지식들을 뽑아내는 것이다. 이 기법은 제품의 실제 사용과 디자인에서의 차이을 최소화하기 위하여 제품 개발 과정에 사용자와 이해관계자들을 참여시킴으로써 디자인팀에게 지식과 영감을 제공하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다.

A failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a procedure in operations management for analysis of potential failure modes within a system for classification by severity or determination of the effect of failures on the system. It is widely used in manufacturing industries in various phases of the product life cycle and is now increasingly finding use in the service industry. Failure modes are any errors or defects in a process, design, or item, especially those that affect the customer, and can be potential or actual. Effects analysis refers to studying the consequences of those failures.
