The graphics on this public phone do not have a good mapping and are unclear to some extent. The 7 graphics in the middle show how to use this phone from the beginning to the end. The starting was fine, which shows 'please pick up the receiver'. Below it shows the ways of payment and they are a horizontally arranged in the row. 'Press numbers', 'yell', and 'hang up' are below them. The problem starts from here. The graphics in the last row, which show not options but the procedure, are horizontally arranged the same as the way of payment just above them. It might be confusing because the two rows use the same arrangement although they should have had a different mapping. I think the last row should be vertically arranged: I know the intention of its designer.. she must have tried to make the instruction space symmetric with its display part on the left side. I admit aesthetically this design looks fine but from usability point of view, it is a failure. In addition, the graphics next to the 4 arrows on the number pad seem to say something but is is not so clear.

이 공중전화의 그래픽들은 좋은 매핑을 가지고 있지도 않고 의미가 불분명하다. 중간에 있는 7개의 그래픽들은 전화사용법을 처음부터 끝까지 보여주고 있다. 수화기를 드는 그래픽은 문제없이 보인다. 그 아래에는 지불방법들을 보여주고 있는데 한줄에 수평으로 위치해있다. '번호를 누르세요', '통화를 하세요', '끊어세요' 그래픽들은 그 지불수단 그래픽들 아래에 있다. 문제는 여기서부터 시작되는데. 즉 마지막줄 그래픽들은 옵션이 아니라 전화이용 순서인데도 불구하고 지불수단 옵션 그래픽들 바로 아래, 지불수단과 똑같이 모양으로 수평으로 위치해있다. 헤깔릴 수 있는 이유는 그 마지막 두줄이 서로 다른 매핑을 사용해야 했음에도 같은 배열을 사용했다는 점이다. 마지막 줄은 수직으로 배치되었야하는게 맞다: 물론 이 디자이너의 의도는 충분히 안다. 그녀는 아마도 왼쪽의 디스플레이 부분과 대칭으로 사용법 공간을 만들려고 했었을꺼다. 이것이 미학적으로 더 좋아 보이니까. 하지만 사용편의성의 관점에서는 실패다. 또한 숫자패드에 있는 네개의 화살표 옆에 있는 그래픽들은 대충 무엇인지는 알지만 명확하지는 않다.

Which one would you press between a black and a stainless steel button if you just got on this elevator? The buttons with numbers actually are not buttons. They just indicates what floor the buttons on the right of them are going to. They look more buttons than the stainless steel ones: they have a round shape like the steel ones and the steel ones don't even have any usecue. Misleading users.... Even Braille is on the ones having numbers instead of on the real buttons. Blind people should find a button apart from where they feel Braille. Not user friendly at all. Sometimes-not-understandable American design!!!

만약 여러분이 이 엘리베이터에 탄다면 까만 버튼과 스텐 버튼 중에 어느 버튼을 누를 것 같습니까? 숫자들이 있는 버튼들은 사실 버튼이 아니다. 그 까만 동그란 것은 그것들의 오른쪽에 있는 버튼이 가는 층을 안내하고 있다. 이 까만 동들이는 스텐으로 된 버튼들보다 더욱 버튼 같다: 스텐 버튼과 같이 동그랗게 생겼고 스텐버튼은 사실 어떤 유스큐(사용의 실마리)도 가지고 있지 않다.. 사용자를 잘못 인도하며.... 점자도 실제 버튼이 아닌 그 까만 숫자판 위에 붙어 있다. 상상해보길... 시각장애자가 점자를 손끝으로 느끼는 그 곳이 아닌 다른 곳있는 버튼을 찾아야한다니. 전혀 친사용자와 거리가 멀다. 때때로-이해할-수-없는 미쿡 디자인!

This car is Chrysler Sebring 2009. Its size was almost the same as Hyundai Sonata. However, it was not spacious at all when I got on the car. Incidentally, there was another button on which 'L' and 'U' were written. It was obvious to me that a button with arrows below the button was the one that controls the windows. But at the beginning, there was no clue about what it is for. I couldn't associate anything just from 'L' and 'U' only (later I figured out 'L' refers to 'Lock' and 'U' 'Unlock'). I tried once and then realized that it was a button to unlock or lock the doors. Usually a knob near the window frame plays a role of this button. Why did the designer of this car put it here? If it is assumed that the US is a dangerous country, it might make sense because the one sitting on the passenger seat can easily and fast lock the door within reach. However, the country has very well-structured social security system in general (except for certain dangerous areas) and in the sense, this button could make users confused since two buttons are very closely positioned. Additionally is it really necessary that the one in the passenger seat controls locking or unlocking the doors?

사진에서의 차는 2009년식 크라이슬러 시블링. 현대자동차의 소나타와 거의 동급이지만, 차안에 타보니 이거 아주 좁다. 그런데, 'L'과 'U'가 적힌 특이한 버튼이 눈에 띄였다. 그 버튼 아래의 화살표를 가진 버튼이 창문을 열고 닫는 버튼이라는 것은 분명했다. 처음 봤을 땐, 이게 무엇에 쓰는 물건인지 감이 안왔다. 단지 그 'L'과 'U'를 가지고 바로 연상되는 것이 없었다 (나중에 알았지만, 'L'은 'Lock' 그리고 'U'는 'Unlock'임). 한번 시도를 해보고서는 이 버튼이 차문을 잠그고 열기위한 것임을 알았다. 일반적으로 창문틀 부근에 작은 손잡이가 이 버튼의 기능을 대신하는데... 요건 창문버튼 바로 위에 있네. 이 차의 내장 디자이너는 어떤 생각으로 여기에 그 버튼을 두었을까? 미국이라는 나라가 아주 위험한 지역이라고 가정한다면, 이 디자인이 말이 된다. 왜냐면 조수석에 앉은 사람이 손 가까이에 있는 버튼을 눌러 쉽게 그리고 빠르게 차문을 잠글 수 있기때문에... 위험한 상황에 처했을때 말이다. 하지만 미국이라는 나라는 내 경험으로 치안상태가 좋은 나라다 (물론 일부 특정 지역을 제외하고 일반적으로 말해서). 그런 의미에서 두 버튼이 서로 너무 가까이 붙어있음으로해서 오히려 그 버튼은 사용자들을 헤깔리게 할 수도 있다. 게다가 조수석에 앉은 사람이 아주 손쉽게 차문을 조작한다는 것이 과연 꼭 필요한 것일지...

This is an ashtray in Grand Canyon national park. There is a lot of forest and so forest fire is most prior to what they should prevent to protect its impressive views. For the reason that cigarette butts are the primary causes of forest fires, I think this ashtray has been developed. It has a long neck above the bottom container, on the end of which there is a hole for butts. The hole is not big enough to easily throw a butt into. This is the point. If it had a big mouth, people would tend to throw butts into the mouth with less attention. But thanks to this tiny hole, smokers are supposed to exert effort to put butts into the hole with more attention. Considering that sometimes it is very windy there, this form can prevent forest fires from butts which could be mistakenly blown by wind: it requires some delicate movement when smokers threw their butts away. In this sense, isn't that right 'form follows safety'? However, the designer seems to miss one important thing. There would be more possibilities people can't recognize the ashtray as an ashtray due to its form: in this case, they would throw their butts somewhere else in the sense that they think there is no ashtray, which would increase the risk of forest fires after all.

그랜드캐년 국립공원에 있는 재털이. 그곳은 울창한 숲이 많다. 그래서 산불은 그랜드캐년의 장엄한 풍경을 보호하기 위해 반드시 예방되어야할 것들 중에 최우선이다. 담배꽁초가 산불을 일으키는 주요 원인이라는 이유로, 이 재털이가 디자인된 것 같다. 바닥의 통에서부터 뻣어나온 긴 목을 가진 이 녀석은 그 목의 끝부분에 꽁초가 버려질 구멍이 있다. 그런데 그 구멍이 쉽게 꽁초를 버릴 만큼 그렇게 크지 않다. 이것이 포인트인데. 만약 이 녀석이 큰 입(구멍)을 가졌다면 사람들은 주의를 기울이지 않고 꽁초를 던져 넣을 것 같다. 그러나 이 작은 입덕분에 흡연자들은 그들이 다핀 담배꽁초를 그 작은 구멍에 넣기위해 더 많은 주의를 기울일 것으로 기대된다. 특히 이 지역이 때때로 강한 바람이 분다는 것을 고려할때, 이 형태는 꽁초가 실수로 바람에 의해 날아가버려 산불을 일으킬 수 있는 가능성을 방지한다: 실제로 작은 구멍에 넣는 것은 더 섬세한 손동작을 요구한다. 이런 의미에서 '형태는 안전을 따른다?' 아닐까 우스게로 생각해본다. 하지만 이 재털이의 디자이너는 한가지 중요한 사항을 간과한 것 같다. 즉, 흡연자들이 이 재털이의 형태로 인해서 그 재털이를 재털이로 인식못할 수도 있다는 가능성을 높일 수 있다: 이 경우, 그들은 재털이를 찾지 못해 다른 아무 곳에 꽁초를 버릴 수도 있으며, 이는 결국 산불의 위험을 높이는 결과를 초래할 수도 있음을 의미한다.

I had a feeling that American people didn't pay much attention to details of their daily-used products. This thought came from the fact that they like super-sized ones and they don't care about citizens' lives such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and so on. Different from the thought, they seem to pay attention to small things. I've never seen these buttons on elevators. The ones I have seen are just flat buttons with numbers on flat stainless steel plate. However, this has angles which face users and make them see the numbers better as you see in the picture above. Thanks to this angles, It is also even easier to press them: probably it seems to have a leverage system inside using the angle.

미쿡사람들은 매일 매일 사용하는 제품들의 디테일에 주의를 기울이지 않는다고 생각했다. 나의 이 생각은 그 미쿡사람들이 엄청 큰 사이즈를 좋아하고 이라크와 아프카니스탄과 같은 나라의 소시민들의 목숨에는 관심이 없다는 사실에서 연유한 것이다. 이런 나의 생각과 다르게, 그들은 사소한 것들에도 관심을 보이는 모양이다. 이때까지 타 본 엘리베이터들 중에서 이러한 버튼을 가진 것을 본적이 없다. 내가 봐왔던 것은 평평한 스탱판 위에 숫자들이 있는 그런 평평한 버튼들이었다. 사진에서의 이 엘리베이터는 사용자가 더 쉽게 볼 수 있도록 사용자쪽으로 각도를 가지고 있다. 또한 이런 모양 덕분에 버튼을 누리기도 한결 쉽다: 아마도 이 각도를 이용하여 버튼 안에 어떤 지렛대 시스템을 가지고 있는 것 같다.
