런던의 서쪽에 위치한 하이드파크는 규모면에서나 관리면에서나 한국의 그것들과 비할 수가 없다. 한국의 공원들과 특별한 차이를 말한다면, 하이드파크는 그 자체로 자연스럽다. 한국의 공원들이 너무 인위적인 것에 비해. 이 차이는 공원들의 태생에서 비롯된다. 하이드파크는 런던이 도시로 성장하기 이전부터 귀족들의 사냥터로서 이미 존재하고 있었고, 한국의 공원들은 도시가 들어서면서 함께 공원이 계획되었기 때문이다. 역사와 전통이란 역시 무시할 것이 못된다. 영국도 네덜란드 만큼은 아니지만, 자전거가 보편적 교통수단으로 이용되고, 자전거 도로도 비교적 잘 정돈되어 있다. 중간 왼쪽은 하이드파크의 자전거 도로 사인을 찍은 것인다. 두 사인의 차이를 모르겠다. 아시는 분이 계시면 설명해 주셨으면 한다.

디자인이 Context를 떠나서는 의미가 없듯이. 런던의 public design들도 이런 런던이라는 도시의 context에 잘 어울리게 발전되어 왔다. 흐림과 비로 대표되는 런던의 날씨로 인해 검정색은 우울함 보다는 고상함을 더한다. 그리고 공사 안내판의 노란색은 잿빛하늘에 너무도 대비적으로 잘 어울린다. 결국 design in context라 함은 기후, 날씨, 일조량, 인종, 문화, 등등과 어우러진 디자인을 말하는 것. 이런 의미에서 선진국의 디자인 성공 사례를 그대로 한국 사회에 복사하는 것은 정말 위험한 발상임에 틀림없다.

원색의 버스티켓 발권기 인터페이스, 봉투 색깔로 분리수거를 하는 것 같은 쓰레기 더미들, 그리고 우아해 보이는 City of Westminister의 쓰레기통. 왠지 런던의 분위기들과 잘 어울린다.

Hyde park in London looks different from ones in South Korea to large extent: it looks just natural, while they something artificial. This difference results from the history of how they are created: there has been the woods as a hunting place for the noble where become Hyde park much before London became a big city. However, parks in South Korea have been made while cities were planned and developed. History and tradition shouldn't be overlooked in that sense. Cycling bikes seems to be a popular commuting transportation for Londoners although its popularity is less than the Netherlands. There is a picture to show roads for cyclists next to the park above. One of the signs for the roads have no hint what it means (if there is anyone who knows this, plz explain it).

As design is meaningless without taking its context into account, public design in London goes well with her context. Black color looks lofty rather than gloomy because of grey color and rain in London and a yellow signborad to announce any traffice information or construction suits her so much as opposed to the grey colored sky. As a matter of fact, 'design in context' means to design something considering climate, weather, the sunshine, race, culture, and so on, where it is used and experienced. This proves how silly copying successful designed things is in developed countries for Korean society.

The other pictures show a colorful bus ticket dispenser, waste bags with different colors (showing differences on contents) and a gracefully-designed black waste bin in the city of Westminister. They all match well with the context which London has.
