A public chair in Bergen. It is interesting that there is an armrest part in the middle of the chair. People can lean their arm on it while sitting. However, the length of the chair seems long enough for three people to sit on. A possible analogy is that the municipality would put the armrest part in the middle of the chair so as to prevent people (e.g. beggars or homeless people) from lying on it. It looks interesting but ugly somehow. In addition, the intention of the design is mean, at least to me.

베르겐에 있는 공공을 위한 의자. 그 의자 가운데 팔걸이 부분이 있는 것은 흥미롭다. 사람들이 앉아서 쉬는 동안 팔을 기댈 수 있으니... 허나, 그 의자의 길이는 사실 세사람이 앉기에도 충분해 보인다. 가능한 하나의 유추는 지역행정당국이 사람들(예, 거지나 집 잃은 사람들)이 눕지 못하게 의도적으로 중간에 팔걸이를 설치했을 수도 있다는 것이다. 흥미로운 디자인이지만 사실 흉해보인다. 게다다 그 디자인의 의도가 사악해보인다. 적어도 나에겐.

experiment in chair

Chairs are either one having the back of a chair or one without it. This chair, however, has its back on one side and no back on the other side. It's not normal. Fun design. This kind of trivial experiments in design such as integration and deconstruction have come up with very nice products aesthetically and functionally.

의자들은 등받이를 가지고 있거나 아니면 등받이가 없다. 그치만 이 의자는 한쪽에는 등받이가 있고 다른 한쪽에는 등받이가 없다. 일반적이 않은 재미있는 디자인이다. 디자인에 있어 통합과 해체와 같은 이러한 사소한 실험들이 미학적으로 기능적으로 멋진 제품들을 만들어내고 있다.

evacuation chair

A pictogram to show what the evacuation chair is and how to use at the same time well in Schiphol airport. The disable who went upstairs by elevator could not go downstairs by elevator again in case of fire because elevators might not operate. So, that's why this evacuation chair is upstairs and just next to a staircase there. They can be easily and fast moved downstairs in safety by helpers. However, it is suspicious if people have time to think of using the chair in case of emergency. Moreover, if I was a person upstairs, I would just raise a guy who can't walk with arms and then take him/her downstairs. It might be faster and easier than taking out the chair from package, puting him on the chair, and then taking him downstairs unless the guy is very heavy. However, if you were on the third floor with the handicapped guy in case of fire, this chair would be more efficient to carry him. In fact, this chair is on the third floor of the airport. In my experience, there exist reasons why a thing is there in the Netherlands.

스키폴 공항에 있는 피난용 의자가 무엇이고 동시에 어떻게 사용하는지를 잘 보여주는 픽토그램. 엘리베이터를 타고 윗층에 올라갔던 장애인들(여기서는, 휠체어를 타는 사람들)은 화재의 경우에 엘리베이터가 작동하지 않을 수 있기 때문에 그 엘리베이터를 타고 다시 아래층으로 피난할 수 없을 수 있다. 그래서 이 피난용 의자가 윗층 계단 바로 옆에 준비되어 있다. 장애자들은 도움을 주는 사람들에 의해서 쉽고 빠르게 그리고 안전하게 아래층으로 옮겨질 수 있다. 하지만 그런 비상사태의 경우에 사람들이 그 피난용 의자를 사용하겠다는 생각을 할 겨를이 있을지 의심스럽다. 또한 만약 내가 윗층에 있다면, 걸을 수 없는 사람을 두 팔로 들어서 아래층으로 옮길 것 같다. 그 사람이 돼지가 아닌한 그 의자의 포장을 벗겨서 펴고, 그 사람을 그 의자에 앉히고, 그리고 아래층으로 데리고 가는 것 보다 훨씬 빠르고 쉬울 것 같다. 그러나, 만약에 그 장애인이 화재시에 4층에 있다면, 이 피난용 의자가 그 친구를 나르는데 훨씬 효율적일 것이다. 실제로 이 의자는 공항의 4층에 위치해있다. 네덜란드에서는 경험해보니 이곳에는 어떤 것들이 거기에 있는 이유들이 다 있더라.

context dependent design

The Panton chair cost more than 200 euro when I checked in a department store at Den Haag. Considering the price, those chairs in the picture must be copies of the famous one. Faded colors....they look crappy. If they were kept indoor and put in a tidy place, they would look very cool....totally differently from the ones in the pictures. Feeling on a product is very dependent on context in which it is used.

헤이그에 있는 어느 백화점에서 확인했을 때 팬톤 의자의 가격이 200유로(한화로 약 35만원)가 넘었다. 그 가격을 고려할 때, 사진 속의 팬톤 의자들은 복제품임에 틀림이 없다. 빛바랜 색깔들.... 싸구려처럼 보이는.... 만약 이 의자들이 실내에서 잘 보관되고 어느 깔끔한 장소에 놓여있다면, 아주 멋져 보였을 것이다. 사진 속에서와는 아주 아주 다르게.... 이렇듯 제품이 주는 느낌은 그것이 사용되는 컨텍스트(맥락)에 아주 아주 좌지우지된다.
