Inhabitants in Kangwon province had little things to eat during harsh winter long time ago. With wheat sorghum or oat flour prepared against winter they seemed to make noodle ans survive with the noodle. Supposedly there was nothing to see outside but snow in winter. So, they probably had to spend a long long time at home. Continuous long and boring days... I suppose they killed time at home to try to make diverse shapes of noodles and fried pancakes. It would have been a fun to them. The inheritance still remains in this province. You can enjoy several different types of local noodles and fried pancakes if you go there. They have little to do with good taste, though. This might be a good example to show how the climate and environment influences design of artifacts created in an place.     

오래전 강원지방의 주민들은 혹독한 겨울동안 먹을 것이 거의 없었다. 그런 겨울에 맞서 준비해두었던 밀가루, 수수가루 혹은 귀리가루로 그들은 누들을 만들어 먹었던 것으로 보인다. 추측컨데, 그곳의 겨울은 눈말고는 바깥에 아무것도 없었을 것이다. 그런고로 아마도 아주 긴긴 시간들을 집에서 보내야만 했을 것이다. 계속 되는 길고 지루한 날들.... 그들은 다양한 형태의 국수와 부침개를 요리조리 만들어보며 시간을 죽였을 것이다. 그들에게는 이 창작행위가 하나의 즐거움이었음을 것이다. 그때의 유산은 아직도 이 지역에 남아있는데... 그곳에 가면 여러개의 다양한 형태의 국수와 전들을 즐길 수 있다. 하지만 그것들이 맛은 별로 없다. 인공물의 디자인은 그것이 창조된 지역의 기후와 환경에 의해 만들어짐을 보여주는 좋은 예인 것 같다.

It is easy to find a stop on a route map on the subway at Seoul in the daytime. However, it becomes very hard to do so when the subway is full of passengers at rush hours because the subway maps usually stick near its doors: passengers in the middle of a large crowd can hardly see them near its doors. This idea in the picture might be a solution in the situation although viewer's neck might hurt and they might feel dizzy for a while while looking upward. It is critical to think the users of the maps are not always near its doors. This shows why context in design is important.

낮에 서울의 지하철에서 노선도를 보고 정차할 곳을 찾는 것은 그리 어렵지 않다. 하지만, 출퇴근 시간 지하철이 만원일 때 노선도에서 정차할 곳을 찾는 것은 아주 어렵다. 거의 모든 노선도들이 출입문 부근에 위치해 있기 때문이다. 빽빽한 무리의 사람들 중앙에 있는 승객들에겐 출입문 부근의 지도들을 본다는 것은 거의 불가능하다. 사진 속의 이 아이디어는 그러한 상황속에서 어떤 해결책을 제시해줄 수도 있다. 물론 천장을 보니 일시적으로 목이 아프고 머리가 어지러울 수도 있다. 지하철 노선도의 이용자들이 항상 문 가까이 있지 않다는 사실을 염두해두는 것이 중요하다. 왜 디자인에 있어 컨텍스트가 중요한지 보여주는 아주 아주 작은 예이다.

The Panton chair cost more than 200 euro when I checked in a department store at Den Haag. Considering the price, those chairs in the picture must be copies of the famous one. Faded colors....they look crappy. If they were kept indoor and put in a tidy place, they would look very cool....totally differently from the ones in the pictures. Feeling on a product is very dependent on context in which it is used.

헤이그에 있는 어느 백화점에서 확인했을 때 팬톤 의자의 가격이 200유로(한화로 약 35만원)가 넘었다. 그 가격을 고려할 때, 사진 속의 팬톤 의자들은 복제품임에 틀림이 없다. 빛바랜 색깔들.... 싸구려처럼 보이는.... 만약 이 의자들이 실내에서 잘 보관되고 어느 깔끔한 장소에 놓여있다면, 아주 멋져 보였을 것이다. 사진 속에서와는 아주 아주 다르게.... 이렇듯 제품이 주는 느낌은 그것이 사용되는 컨텍스트(맥락)에 아주 아주 좌지우지된다.
