We went to Bermondsey to visit a design agency, Tangerine. British Martin Darbyshire and Korean Dontae Lee are the cofounder of the company. I remember reading the interview with Darbyshire at a daily newspaper in relation to Design Seoul project. They have done some projects in UK and South Korea. The remarkable work is the project for British Airways which designed seats for the first class cabin. They worked with Samsung and LG as well. I was impressed about not their achievements but the atmosphere at the design room because this was my first visit to a foreign design agency. It looked free and I could read that in the designers' faces as well, even though they might be struggling with deadlines. It is one of my wish lists to work at this kind of company. I am sitting alone at a closed space struggling with books and papers, though. Just imagine how wonderful you have your own design company in future.

사실 우리는 탄제린이라는 디자인 에이전시를 방문하기 위해 Bermondsey 지역을 갔었다. 영국의 Martin Darbyshire와 한국의 이돈태가 세운 회사다. 언젠가 Martin Darbshire라는 이름을 한국의 일간지에서 디자인 서울 프로젝트와 관련해서 인터뷰했던 기사를 본 거억이 있다. 여튼 주로 한국과 영국의 프로젝트들을 해왔고, 작년에 영국항공의 퍼스트클라스 시트를 디자인했다. 한국의 삼성과 엘지와도 함께 프로젝트를 진행했다고 실적에 기록되어 있다. 사실 실적에는 별 관심이 없었다. 탄제린이 처음으로 방문하는 외국 디자인 에이전시이기에 그 분위기가 인상적이었다. 자유로운 분위기. 마감일에 쫓기고 있을지라도 디자이너들의 얼굴에서 그 분위기를 읽을 수 있었다. 이런 회사에서 일해보는 것이 나의 희망 중에 하나인데, 그러나 지금 연구실에 갇혀 책과 논문과 씨름하고 있다. 상상해본다 미래에 내 자신의 디자인회사를 가지고 있다면 얼마나 멋질까하고...
