Bodum, Inc. is a tableware and kitchenware company founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1944 by Peter Bodum. Besides being known for the aesthetic quality of their products, Bodum is recognized as a leading maker of French presses, vacuum coffee brewers, and double-walled beverage glasses made of borosilicate glass (source: wikipedia). Transparent glass comes across my mind whenever I hear about Bodum or see Bodum logo. Many Bodum products are made of tranparent glass, indeed. The picture above shows the building of their main store at Copenhagen. It has a transparent glass facade like images which their products have. It is a good example in the sense that it showes how product design in a firm and retail design with which their products are well sold can go together.
Bodum은 1944년 Peter Bodum에 의해 덴마크 코펜하겐에 세워진 tableware와 kitchenware를 생산하는 회사이다. Bodum 제품들은 그 조형적 색채적 아름다움으로 잘 알려진 것 외에도, French presses (주로 한국에서는 차를 우려낼 때 많이 사용되는 제품으로, 비이커(beaker) 모양의 잔에 커피나 차를 넣고 발이 달린 손잡이를 눌러 뜨거운 물을 부어서 커피나 차를 우려내는 것), 진공으로 커피를 내리는 기계, 그리고 화학 실험실에서 많이 보이는 시험관과 같은 재료로 만들어진 이중으로 된 유리잔의 선두 제조사로 알려져 있다 (출처: wikipedia). Bodum에 관해서 듣거나 Bodum logo를 볼때면 투명한 유리가 떠오른다. 실제로 Bodum의 많은 제품들이 투명한 유리로 만들어진다. 위의 사진은 Copenhagen에 있는 Bodum의 본점 건물을 보여주고 있다. 이 건물의 전면(facade)은 그들이 생산하는 제품들이 가지고 있는 이미지들처럼 투명한 유리로 되어 있다. 이는 한 회사의 제품디자인과 그 제품들을 팔기 위한 retail design이 어떻게 잘 조화롭게 어울릴 수 있는지를 보여주는 훌륭한 사례이다.

[droog] crystal virus: massive infection

Pieke Bergmans is a young product designer from the Netherlands. She
has studied at the Academy of Arts, St. Joost Breda (graphic design).
HKA-Art-School Arnhem (3D-Design). Design Academy Eindhoven (Industrial
Design). Royal College of Art, London (MA, Design Products)
She created a special edition of Crystal virus for Droog:
the Massive infection. Like real amoebas and bacteria, 30 amorphous
forms of liquid crystal ‘invaded’ the table. They burned their traces
to the wood, leaving a black circle pattern. Instead of being
destructive, these shapes are friendly and can be used as vases (source: www.droog.com).
Creating new things doesn't necessarily mean a design practice. Rather I think adding values onto existing things around us is 'designing' indeed like her work: glass manufacturing techniques + characteristics of materials (wood and glass)

페기 베르흐만스는 드록디자인을 위해 스페셜 에디션으로 크리스탈 바이러스: 대량 감염(해석을 하니 의미가 이상해지네)을 디자인했다. 살아있는 아메바나 박테리아처럼, 30개의 비정형의 리퀴드 크리스탈들이 테이블을 범했다. 그것들은 나무를 태워서 검은 원형의 패턴으로 그들의 흔적을 남긴다. 파괴적으로 되는 것 대신, 이러한 형태들은 친숙하며 꽃병으로도 사용될 수 있다. (출처: 드록디자인)
새로운 것들을 창조한다는 것이 반드시 디자인 행위를 뜻하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 내 생각에는 우리의 주변에 이미 존재해왔던 것들에 가치를 부여하는 것이 진정한 '디자인하는 것'이라 본다. 그녀의 작품에는 그런 관점이 잘 나타나있다. 우리에게 어느 정도 알려져 있는 유리 가공 기법을 통해 일상의 테이블(나무)과 유리라는 재료의 상호작용을 만들어내어 테이블과 유리, 그리고 제작기법에 가치를 부여하고 있다.
