By accident, I saw the Japanese museum on the way to the Leiden central station. I entered the museum and paid a large sum of 4 euro (student discount) because of my curiosity about what collection they have and how they see Japan. There were a variety of things ranged from Japanese fish hooks, books, and stuffed specimens to porcelains and a miniature of the traditional Japanese house in the museum. It looked like a warehouse to store all the old stuff from Japan. Since the Netherlands had started to trade with Japan, they seemed to bring all the things from Japan. It was very impressive that there is a Japanese museum in the Netherlands, which indicates how interesting Dutch people have had in Japanese culture rather than any other Asian cultures. On the other hand, I was wondering why European people have been enthusiastic about Japanese culture only although there are many similarities between Korean, Chinese and Japanese cultures. There would be many reasons to explain the phenomenon. What I suppose is, however, that Japanese people seem to know how to promote their culture to European people well from long time ago. For instance, when our Korean government sent fan dance or samulnori groups abroad, Japanese one funded the renovation of museum such as the Louvre and the restoration of cultural heritage in other countries. It's a shame that this would be just one reason among many others to explain the European enthusiasm for Japanese culture.
라이덴 중앙역으로 향하다 우연히 일본 뮤지엄을 발견했다. 어떤 소장품들을 가지고 있길래 그리고 네덜란드 사람들이 어떻게 일본을 보는지 궁금해서, 거금 4유로(학생할인)를 주고 들어가 보았다. 온갖 잡다한 것이 다 있었는데, 예를 들면 근대 일본의 낚시바늘들, 책들, 동물 박제들에서 부터 도자기, 지도, 일본 전통주택 미니어처 등등. 한편으론 일본의 잡동사니들을 보관하고 있는 창고처럼 느껴졌다. 아마도 네덜란드가 일본과 처음 교역을 시작했을 때부터, 일본으로 부터 가져온 것들이리라. 무엇보다 네더란드에 뮤지엄 많다지만 일본에 관한 뮤지엄이 있다는 것은 아주 인상적이었다. 이는 한편으로 네덜란드 사람들이 다른 아시아 문화들과는 달리 얼마나 일본 문화에 관심이 있는지를 보여주고 있다. 다른 한편으로는 한국, 중국, 일본 사이에 많은 문화적 유사점들이 있는데도 왜 유럽 사람들은 유독 일본 문화에만 열광적인지 궁금했다. 이것을 설명할 수 있는 많은 이유들이 있을 것 같은데. 내가 추측하기에 일본 사람들은 오래 전부터 유럽사람들에게 자신들의 문화를 전파하는 방법을 잘 알고 있었던 것 같다. 예를 들면, 우리 한국 정부가 부채춤 무용단과 사물놀이패를 외국에 보낼 때, 일본 정부는 루브르같은 뮤지엄의 레노베이션과 다른 나라들의 문화 유산들의 복원에 금전적 지원을 했었다. 일본문화에 대한 유럽사람들의 열광을 설명하는 다른 많은 이유들 중에 이것이 고작 하나의 이유라는 것이 안타까울 뿐이다.
