Way-finding with a city map is a typical thing that tourists do. Would it be replaced by a digital navigator in future? I hope not. Sometimes it makes us confused but at least we can ask other people on the street in a way to stimulate the interaction between people. Shopping is always fun to me along with sightseeing. Most of items I like are something I can't afford but I just enjoy seeing and feeling them. A raincoat which is called Barbour is famous in London because of its wax-coated fabric. The rainy and windy climate would come up with valuable goods. It's heavy but it looks very luxury: probably because of its expensive price.지도를 손에 들고 길을 찾는 것은 여행자의 전형적인 모습이다. 미래에 이런 행위가 전자 네비게이션으로 대체될까? 그러질 않기를 바란다. 지도로 길을 찾는 것 쉽지 않지만, 이것도 하나의 즐거움이 될 수 있고, 때때로 길을 물으며 거리의 사람들과의 인터렉션을 유도할 수도 있다. 쇼핑은 관광과 함께 항상 즐거움을 준다. 내가 마음에 드는 대부분의 상품들을 내가 지불할 수 없을 정도로 비싸지만 그냥 그런 것들을 보고 느끼는 것만으로도 즐겁다. 런던의 비바람 날씨덕분에 유명한 상품이 탄생하기도 한다. 바버라고 불리는 레인코트는 두꺼운 왁스를 입힌 천때문에 유명하다. 왁스로 인해 무겁지만 비싼 가격 때문인지 고급스러워 보인다.
The last day at London. On the way to Heathrow airport, the sky was dark blue and I felt something left at London. To save accommodation cost, we decided to sleep at the airport because the flight to Helsinki was supposed to leave early morning. We bought something to eat for night. Different from our expectation, there was no place to lie for sleep. So we drank a couple of coffee to keep waking us up. I don't recommend to spend a night at airport if you are not that young, who want to challenge everything. While struggling not to sleep, the design of a disposal coffee cup made me impressed: the waved surface not only looks good but also works as a cooling fin which makes a drinker feel not very hot on his/her hands. The Scandinavia design story will begin soon....
런던에서의 마지막날. 히드로 공항으로 가는 길. 하늘은 짙은 푸른색. 런던에 무엇인가 남겨 놓고 가는 느낌. 런던의 비싼 숙박비때문에 비용을 아껴볼 요량으로 마침 헬싱키로 향하는 비행기가 새벽에 있어 공항에서 자기로 결정했다. 밤참을 위해 먹을꺼리도 사고. 그러나 기대와는 다르게, 그 곳엔 누워 잘 공간은 없었다. 그래서 몇 잔의 커피로 비행기 탈때까지 버텨보기 했다. 모험을 즐기는 젊은이가 아니라면 공항에서의 일박은 비추다. 졸음과 투쟁하는 동안, 일회용 커피컵 디자인이 눈에 쏙 들어왔다. 웨이브 모양의 표면은 시각적으로도 기능적으로도 (표면의 요철이 컵표면이 뜨겁지 않도록 냉각핀 역할을 한다) 좋아 보인다. .런던을 접으며, 스칸디나비아 디자인 여행기가 곧 시작될 예정이다.

Too famous Museum Tate Modern, which is part of group known as Tate with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives. I think this museum has a remarkable reputation because it is housed in the former power station by architect Herzog.
I didn't know the spetacular artificial sun works, designed by Olafur Eliasson, had been exhibited here until I went there.
너무 나도 유명한 테이트 모던 뮤지엄. 테이트 브리튼, 테이트 리버풀, 테이트 세인트 이브즈와 함께 테이트로 알려진 뮤지엄의 하나. 이 뮤지엄이 특별히 유명한 이유는 유명한 건축가 헤르조그에 의해 옛날 발전소 자리를 부수지 않고 보존하면서 그 안에 뮤지엄을 심었다는 것 때문이지 않을까. 올라퍼 엘리아선이 디자인한 장엄한 인공 태양 전시가 테이트 모던에서 있었다는 걸 이 곳에 와서야 알았다.

When I went to the design museum, a new exhibition of an architect Hadid was being organized. Owing to the preparation, we was able to enter the museum with free of charge. What I have seen was some artworks of Damien Hirst, who is famous for showing animals' sections in his works. Beside his works, there were nothing interesting but a rectangular shaped stool and a hand dryer designed by Dyson who has designed futuristic-looking vacuum cleaners. It worked much better than any other hand dryer at public toilets: the water on wet hands drops on the floor and sometimes on my shoes or clothes (it blows the water out) but this one naturally eats the water in his mouth. It is a good example to show how design research makes a thing better.런던의 디자인 뮤지엄을 갔을 땐, 건축가 하디드의 전시를 준비 중이었다. 메인 전시가 준비 중인 관계로 우리는 무료로 뮤지엄에 입장할 수 있었다. 다른 작은 전시관에서는 damien hirst(실제 동물의 단면을 작품으로 만드는 것으로 유명한)의 일부 작품이 전시 중이었다. 사각형 모양의 변기 그리고 dyson이 디자인한 핸드드라이어를 제외하고는 흥미로운 것이 없었다. dyson의 핸드드라이어가 인상적이었던 이유는, 공중 화장실의 핸드드라이어가 위에서 아래로 바람을 불어 물기를 날리는 반면 (이 경우, 그 물기들은 주로 나의 신발이나 옷으로 튀곤 한다), dyson의 것은 지극히 중력을 자연스럽게 이용해서 물기를 이 놈이 다 먹어 버린다. 연구를 통한 디자인이 가치를 보여주는 사례다. @ London in June 2007

We went to Bermondsey to visit a design agency, Tangerine. British Martin Darbyshire and Korean Dontae Lee are the cofounder of the company. I remember reading the interview with Darbyshire at a daily newspaper in relation to Design Seoul project. They have done some projects in UK and South Korea. The remarkable work is the project for British Airways which designed seats for the first class cabin. They worked with Samsung and LG as well. I was impressed about not their achievements but the atmosphere at the design room because this was my first visit to a foreign design agency. It looked free and I could read that in the designers' faces as well, even though they might be struggling with deadlines. It is one of my wish lists to work at this kind of company. I am sitting alone at a closed space struggling with books and papers, though. Just imagine how wonderful you have your own design company in future.사실 우리는 탄제린이라는 디자인 에이전시를 방문하기 위해 Bermondsey 지역을 갔었다. 영국의 Martin Darbyshire와 한국의 이돈태가 세운 회사다. 언젠가 Martin Darbshire라는 이름을 한국의 일간지에서 디자인 서울 프로젝트와 관련해서 인터뷰했던 기사를 본 거억이 있다. 여튼 주로 한국과 영국의 프로젝트들을 해왔고, 작년에 영국항공의 퍼스트클라스 시트를 디자인했다. 한국의 삼성과 엘지와도 함께 프로젝트를 진행했다고 실적에 기록되어 있다. 사실 실적에는 별 관심이 없었다. 탄제린이 처음으로 방문하는 외국 디자인 에이전시이기에 그 분위기가 인상적이었다. 자유로운 분위기. 마감일에 쫓기고 있을지라도 디자이너들의 얼굴에서 그 분위기를 읽을 수 있었다. 이런 회사에서 일해보는 것이 나의 희망 중에 하나인데, 그러나 지금 연구실에 갇혀 책과 논문과 씨름하고 있다. 상상해본다 미래에 내 자신의 디자인회사를 가지고 있다면 얼마나 멋질까하고... @ London in June 2007

London's bus information board. They have adopted distinguished color codes for bus numbers and routes. The information on the board seems visually clear and easy to see. However, no color in the bus numbers is used on the board hanging by the pole. It's also a bit dissatisfying that there is no additional visual information such as a simplied map on which realistic routes are shown.사진은 런던의 버스정류장의 버스 정보시스템의 단편적인 예를 보여주고 있다. 버스 번호와 행선지 표시에 잘 식별되는 칼라 코드를 적용하였다. 겉보기에는 시각적으로 보기 쉽게 디자인된 것 같다. 하지만 폴의 상단에 위치한 정차하는 버스 번호에는 칼라코드가 적용되지 않았다. 또한 버스의 루트를 현실적으로 보여주는 간략한 지도가 빠져 있는 것도 흠이라면 흠인 것 같다. @ London in June 2007
