concept differences 02: stop announcement

If you have ever taken a tube at London, you might remember how a coming stop was announced on the tube. It says the next stop is South Kensington, for instance. However, the way of announcing what a coming stop is is different in South Korea. It is announced like this way: this stop is City hall, for example. Can you see the difference between the two cases? For announcement of a coming stop on a tube or a bus, Western European people uses 'next' while South Korean 'this'. It might result from just English expression difference but I think it has something to do with the differences between Western and Asian concept on age counting system. This is supposed to be tackled in the next posting.

만약 런던에서 지하철을 타보셨다면, 여러분은 아마도 내릴 정거장이 어떻게 안내되는지 기억할 수 있을껍니다. 예를 들면, 런던에서는 "다음 정거장은 South Kensington입니다." 하지만 한국의 지하철은 다른 방법으로 안내가 됩니다. 예를 들면, "이번 정거장은 시청입니다." 두 경우에서 차이점이 발견됩니다. 지하철이나 버스를 비롯한 대중교통에서 서유럽 사람들은 이번에 정차할 정거장 안내에서 "Next(다음)"를 사용하고 반면 한국에서는 "This(이번)"가 사용됩니다. 그냥 영어적 표현의 차이라고 생각하실 수 있지만, 제가 보기엔 이 차이는 나이를 세는 방법이 동양과 서양이 다른 것과 같은 맥락에서 이해해야 합니다.
