Electric boxes on the street used to look like an ugly artifact. Nowadays, they are being recreated by painting which dresses them to fit their environments. They can be used as a table in public shown in the picture, depending on the context where they locate. It might be a good idea to make full use of existing things but it looks too artificial to me....

길거리의 전기박스들은 예전엔 흉한 인공물처럼 보였었다. 요즘은 그것이 있는 환경에 어울리게 그림을 그려 넣음으로써 다시 새롭게 태어나고 있다. 전기박스들이 놓여있는 곳의 컨텍스트에 따라 사진에서와 같이 테이블로도 사용될 수 있다. 기존의 것들의 활용이라는 것에서는 좋은 생각이지만, 나에겐 너무 인공적으로 보인다.

Most of Thai people don't eat dogs as food even though some people who live in northern part of Thailand have them. It is because they think dogs are the most friendly animal to human. Probably, their religious belief affects the custom: dogs could be men in their former life according to Buddhism. At any rate, seeing sleeping dogs on the street is very common there. I suppose they have become one of the most common associations related to Thai culture. Dogs! They look like a part of street tiles which has a figure of a dog because they hardly move although people walk just beside them in Thailand. A sudden idea....it might be very funny to make and lay street tiles with dog looks like the picture above for Bangkok public design. Don't you think so?

태국 북부지역의 일부 사람들이 개고기를 먹을지라도 대부분의 태국사람들은 개고기를 먹지 않는다. 이는 개는 사람과 가장 친밀한 동물이고, 또한 그들의 종교적 신념도 그런 관습에 영향을 미쳤으리라. 불교에서는 개들도 그들의 전생에서는 사람이었을 수도 있다. 어쨋든, 길에서 자고 있는 개들을 보는 것은 태국에서는 아주 흔하다. 추측컨데, 거리의 개들은 태국을 떠올릴때 가장 흔하게 연상되는 모습들 중에 하나일 것이다. 사람들이 걔들 옆을 지나가도 꿈쩍도 하지 않는다. 마치 개의 모습을 가진 보도블럭의 일부처럼 느껴진다. 갑자기 든 생각..... 방콕의 퍼블릭 디자인을 위해서 사진에서 처럼 개의 무늬를 가진 보도블럭을 만들어서 길에 까는 것....아주 재미있어 보인다. 안그런가?

The climate changes the way how people make and use things in the region. The stands in the market have their own style to keep customers shopping or eating comfortably in case of frequent rain and cold weather of Finland. It is surrounded by windscreens with transparent vinyl windows. In fact, Korean snack stalls have similar style like the Finish ones. It might be because South Korean climate has some similarity with that of Finland. It is very cold in winter and rain in summer in South Korea. See the pictures below for reference: a Korean style stand and one of the most popular foods which are being sold there.

기후는 그 지역 사람들이 물건을 만들고 사용하는 방식을 변화시킨다. 시장의 노점들은 핀란드의 잦은 비와 추운 날씨에도 손님들이 편하게 쇼핑하거나 먹을 수 있게끔 그 자신의 스타일을 가지고 있다. 이 포장마차들은 투명한 비닐 창들을 가진 바람막이로 둘러쌓여져 있다. 사실 한국의 포장마차와 아주 유사한 스타일이다. 아마도 추운 겨울과 비가 많은 여름을 가진 한국 기후과 핀란드와 어느 정도 비슷한 구석이 있어서 그런가 보다. 참고로 아래 사진에 한국의 포장마차와 그 곳에서 파는 가장 대중적인 음식 사진이다.

Not far from where I am living, there is this wall through which we see inside. It is made by many orange-colored poles, surrounding a water pumping system. How creative wall can exist in this way mediating between protection for people and the artifact and at once  the harmony with its environments. It is amazing that the idea on the wall is realized in practice: it might be approved by an goverment official who is generally slow and easy-going.

내가 살고 있는 곳에서 부근에 안을 볼 수 있는 벽이 있다. 이 벽은 펌프 시스템을 둘러싸면서 수 많은 오렌지색 막대기로 구성되어 있다. 사람과 그 인공물의 보호와 주변 환경과의 조화를 중재하는 이런 벽이 존재한다는 것 그 자체로 창조적이다. 놀라운 것은 이런 형태의 벽이 아이디어에서 현실화 되었다는 것이다. 공무원의 승인에 의해서 말이다.

London's bus information board. They have adopted distinguished color codes for bus numbers and routes. The information on the board seems visually clear and easy to see. However, no color in the bus numbers is used on the board hanging by the pole. It's also a bit dissatisfying that there is no additional visual information such as a simplied map on which realistic routes are shown.

사진은 런던의 버스정류장의 버스 정보시스템의 단편적인 예를 보여주고 있다. 버스 번호와 행선지 표시에 잘 식별되는 칼라 코드를 적용하였다. 겉보기에는 시각적으로 보기 쉽게 디자인된 것 같다. 하지만 폴의 상단에 위치한 정차하는 버스 번호에는 칼라코드가 적용되지 않았다. 또한 버스의 루트를 현실적으로 보여주는 간략한 지도가 빠져 있는 것도 흠이라면 흠인 것 같다.
