There were unfamiliar deep drains on the pedestrian passage which help rainwater to flow to sewer without making a street full of water. It would be helpful to rainwater but not to pedestrians and especially cyclists. With that, we was able to analogize riding a bike is not popular in Finland. Overall, wood was popularly used in public furniture, buildings, and so on. As expected, that is an good example to show Finland consists of a lot of lakes and forests. Like German architecture, they used steel and glass well. Moreover, they used another material for buildings, which is wood. The harmony of the three materials made a building more delicious.
빗물이 길에 고이는 것을 방지하면서 물을 하수도로 잘 흐르도록하는 배수로가 빗물받이가 있는 길이면 어디든 있었다. 빗물에게는 좋을지 몰라도, 내가 느끼기기에 보행자와 특히 자전거 타는 사람에게는 불편하다. 이것으로 유추컨데, 핀란드에는 자전거가 서유럽만큼 일반화되지 않았을꺼다. 숲과 호수의 나라 핀란드답게 길거리의 대부분의 공공디자인은 나무를 소재로 많이 사용하고 있었다. 독일의 건축 스타일처럼, 그들은 철과 유리를 잘 사용하고 있으며 특히 나무를 함께 사용하여 삼위일체(?)가 된 건물은 멋져보였다.
Except for buildings constructed recently, most of buildings had a socialism and collectivism look, which exemplifies Finland was influenced by Russia. Thus, the mood of the city was gloomy, calm, and stiff. I couldn't see smiles on their faces on the streets, which are common in Western Europe. It might result from their ideology in the past. While there were few people on the streets, there were many people walking around indoor. Because of their horrible weather (they have sunny days during summer only), most of activities seemed to be being done inside buildings. In fact, I hadn't known Marimekko before I came here. It is especially famous for its fabric which is very colorful and bright. The gloomy weather must have influenced the colorfulness of Marimekko in order to make the Finnish cheered up. Thinking that Finland is the number one in juvenile diabetes over the world, I feel more gloomy. However, I just like their gloomy mood so much.
근래에 지어진 건물을 제외하고는, 대부분 건축물은 사회주의, 집단주의의 모습을 간직하고 있었다. 아마도 러시아의 영향을 받은 것을 예증하듯이. 그래서 도시의 전체적 분위기는 우울, 조용, 경직 그 자체다. 길을 지나가면서 서유럽에서 자주 볼 수 있는 사람들의 미소를 볼 수가 없었다. 아마도 과거의 이데올로기때문이리라. 길에는 거의 사람이 없는 반면, 건물 안에 들어가니 많은 사람들이 그곳에 있었다. 더러운(?) 날씨때문(여름철에만 맑은 날이있다)에, 대부분의 활동들이 건물 내부에서 일어나는 것 같다. 사실 이곳에 오기 전에 마리메꼬가 무엇인지 전혀 몰랐다. 이게 칼라풀하고 밝은 색의 패브릭으로 유명하다네. 우울한 날씨가 마리메꼬의 디자인을 칼라풀하게 했으리라. 핀란드가 소아 당뇨에서 세계 최고의 발병률을 보인다는 사실이 더욱 우울하게 하지만, 그래도 이상하게 핀란드의 이 우울함이 좋았다.
According to a friend of mine who lives there, Finnish winter isn't
that as cold as thought even though a themometer points minus 20 degree
celius. It is because the air has little humidity at that season (no
idea about the relationship between humidity and sensory temperature).
Anyway, he recommended to come to Finland especially in winter time.
You can hear any sound very clearly which comes out in a far distance,
according to him.
핀란드에 살고 있는 내 친구 말에 따르면, 핀란드의 겨울은 온도계가 영하 20도를 가르켜도 생각만큼 그렇게 춥지가 않다고 한다. 공기 중에 습도가 거의 없기때문에 그렇다는데, 습도와 체감온도의 관계에 대해 아는바가 없으니. 어쨋든, 그는 겨울의 핀란드를 강력하게 추천했다. 그에 말에 따르면, 아주 멀리서 난 소리도 아주 선명하게 들을 수 있단다.

Having been exhausted all night at the airport, we fell asleep as soon as on board. Helsinki greeted us with a gloomy image due to rain. It was a bit disappointing because we had expected a sunny day in June. It was literally backpacking trip without booking accommodation in advance. We finally found a hostel, spending much time finding where it locates. Fortunately, the hostel was clean and a little bit luxury to us, backpackers. We thought it would be as usual crappy hostels if Finland were not wealthy. There were a fridge, electric cooker, shower and toilet in the room. Now that we have a base camp, let's go sightseeing in Helsinki.
공항에서의 밤샘으로 지쳐서, 비행기에 오르자마자 모두 잠들었다. 헬싱키에 도착했을 때 비가 오고 있어 우울함이 우릴 맞이하고 있었다. 6월의 화창한 날씨를 기대했건만... 이번 여행은 말그대로 배낭여행이어서 미리 예약하는 여유는 없었다. 이리저리 길을 헤매다가 마침내 호스텔을 발견. 다행히도 너무 깨끗하여 우리같은 배낭여행객들에겐 호사스럽게 느껴질 정도다. 아마도 핀란드가 부자나라가 아니였다면 불가능했을 듯. 방에는 아주 새 것 같은 냉장고, 전기쿠커, 샤워, 화장실로 중무장되어 있었다. 이제 베이스캠프를 만들었으니, 헬싱키 관광을 시작해봅시다.
