On a hill where there was a scenic spot at Sedona, I saw this sign, cliff edge warning. The figure in the sign board looked quite so realistic that it made me feel scared to approach to the edge of the cliff. Adding a realistic figure to a written warning would help people recognize how dangerous it is in a serious manner.

in visual culture
us | 2010/02/22 13:28

One of disasters that young generation would suffer in future is that they would become very visually-dependent people: they are not keen to read but love to just look. For instance, look at blogs these days. Most of them consist of full of beautiful pictures only with little descriptions on the pictures (Images > texts). They have been used to not reading-culture but looking-culture. This phenomenon would accelerate as digital camera has been increasingly popular. The main problem in the visual culture is that meaning  transfer is not always concrete and clear. Even misunderstanding!

The picture above shows three signs in Yellowstone national park. The things they are saying are not clear to me. What I could do is just to 'guess' them. Actually guessing is not the purpose there exist signs in our world. They have to give clear pictures of what they mean. The signs would be more understandable if they had some simple words below each of them. Don't miss the importance of written culture.

i agree, but words are also inherently vague. This becomes clear when you look at the statute in the u.s. judicial system.

using the gun, does that mean using it as a method of payment, or does that only indicated the times when the gun was used with an intention to fire it?

these are just some things that i am learning at school these days, and thought i wanted to drop a thought, here.

In my field, using both graphic and text together is the best way to help people's recognition.

Maybe this could work in your field, law... you know. Let say, easy-to-understand law books with pictures for students at law schools. Interesting!

But when I imagine the volume of written law, adding graphic in law books would make you more confused, don't you think so? :)

swimming pool or drinking water?
us | 2010/02/16 13:30

I was confused in front of this signboard. Does it say if you go this way 'there is a swimming pool' or 'there is a place for drinking water'? Regarding this as a pool, the water in the sign seems too deep while regarding as a place for water, the wave in the sign is too high. What the hell does this say? (I couldn't check due to being pressed by time).

a sign

"Please don't throw any stone below"
This sign was on the fence of the bridge over the chasm but actually there was no stone to throw at all on the bridge because it was very long (the glen was just below the middle of the bridge) and paved by cement. After all, it implies there are some people who carry stones before entering on the bridge. Is it our mentality to feel like throwing something down when we stand on a very high place?
