The United States is a big country and consist of many states each of which is as big as a country in the world. In that sense, it is hard to generalize design in America. At least, the design in Arizona where there are many deserts and barren areas look pretty direct and functional. Maybe the environment came up with the identity of their design. This can be shown in the picture above. The speed camera on a cross-section doesn't have any ornaments. They don't intend to hide this kind of cameras, either. It is very functionally designed as tools which have handles and heads only. Products in public is a good example to catch a glimpse of how their design is and furthermore who they are.

미국은 참 큰 나라다. 많은 주로 구성되어있지만, 보통 하나의 주가 세계의 다른 나라만큼 크다. 이런 의미에서 미국에서 디자인을 일반화시킨다는 것은 정말 힘든 일이다. 적어도 내가 말할 수 있는 건, 아리조나주(사막과 황무지가 많은 곳)의 디자인은 아주 직설적이고 기능적이라는 것이다. 아마도 그런 환경이 그런 디자인을 낳았을 것이다. 위 사진이 하나의 그 예이다. 어느 교차로에 있는 스피드 카메라는 장식도 없지만 아예 카메라를 숨길 생각을 안한다. 이 카메라와 그 구조들은 마치 손잡이와 헤드만을 가진 공구들 처럼 아주 기능적으로 디자인되었다. 공공장소에서의 제품들을 보면 그들의 디자인 어떤지 그리고 더 나아가 그들이 어떤 사람들인지 어렴풋이 알 수가 있다.
