In a tuk tuk .... feel both still and speed at the same time. A new experience although suffering the horrible Bangkok pollution.
툭툭에 앉아 스틸과 스피드를 동시에 느끼다. 새로운 경험.... 무시무시한 방콕의 공해를 경험했지만..

I saw many certificates stuck to everywhere in the taxi: even a Buddha over your head in the taxi. They doesn't seem to consider a passenger who sits on the passenger seat: the certificates might obstruct his/her view through the window shield (I don't think a regulation, related to taxis, orders to do so...but it might be possible). They don't seem to like a simple style of interior. On the other hand, liking certificates is a typical phenomenon which has been often observed in high hierarchy society such as Thailand.
택시 안의 모든 곳에 붙어있는 각종 증명서들이 보인다. 심지어 머리 위에는 부처의 그림이 붙어있다. 조수석에 앉는 승객들은 전혀 고려하지 않는 것 같다. 앞유리창에 붙어있는 그 증명서들이 그(녀)의 시야를 가릴 수 있기 때문에...(태국의 택시관련 법이 앞유리창에 각종 증명서들을 덕지덕지 붙이라고 규정하진 않았을 것 같음.. 그렇수도 있지만)그들은 심플한 인테리어는 좋아하지 않는 것 같다. 한편, 증명서를 좋아한다는 것은 태국과 같은 상하위계질서가 엄격한 사회에서 자주 관찰되는 전형적 모습이다.

Most of Thai people don't eat dogs as food even though some people who live in northern part of Thailand have them. It is because they think dogs are the most friendly animal to human. Probably, their religious belief affects the custom: dogs could be men in their former life according to Buddhism. At any rate, seeing sleeping dogs on the street is very common there. I suppose they have become one of the most common associations related to Thai culture. Dogs! They look like a part of street tiles which has a figure of a dog because they hardly move although people walk just beside them in Thailand. A sudden idea....it might be very funny to make and lay street tiles with dog looks like the picture above for Bangkok public design. Don't you think so?
태국 북부지역의 일부 사람들이 개고기를 먹을지라도 대부분의 태국사람들은 개고기를 먹지 않는다. 이는 개는 사람과 가장 친밀한 동물이고, 또한 그들의 종교적 신념도 그런 관습에 영향을 미쳤으리라. 불교에서는 개들도 그들의 전생에서는 사람이었을 수도 있다. 어쨋든, 길에서 자고 있는 개들을 보는 것은 태국에서는 아주 흔하다. 추측컨데, 거리의 개들은 태국을 떠올릴때 가장 흔하게 연상되는 모습들 중에 하나일 것이다. 사람들이 걔들 옆을 지나가도 꿈쩍도 하지 않는다. 마치 개의 모습을 가진 보도블럭의 일부처럼 느껴진다. 갑자기 든 생각..... 방콕의 퍼블릭 디자인을 위해서 사진에서 처럼 개의 무늬를 가진 보도블럭을 만들어서 길에 까는 것....아주 재미있어 보인다. 안그런가?

Some design works in the exhibition for your better understanding Thai design.
Physical zooming device for a digital camera screen
: instead of pressing a zoom in or out button on the camera, users can move a transparent plate, which looks like a magnifying glass, to zoom in or out a picture taken.
Graphic design work for 'reduce salt intake campaign'
: it is a funny graphic design and evokes me a disgusting image on ketchup. We indirectly see how badly Western food influences Asian people including Thai people through this campaign.
Some design works for Chinese restaurants
: they include the menu table, the napkin, table clothes, and doggy bag.
Ergonomically designed mortar
: I know how difficult it is to firmly hold the typical mortar by a hand while using it. This work tried to work out the uncomfortable experience. It might look ugly but it deserves interest since it is a very functional product.
다음은 태국의 디자인을 더 잘 이해하기 위한 몇가지 디자인 작품들이다.
디지털 카메라의 스크린 물리적 확대축소 장치
: 카메라의 줌인 줌아웃 버튼을 사용하는 대신, 사용자는 돋보기 처럼 보이는 투명판을 움직여서 사진을 확대하거나 축소해서 볼 수 있다.
'소금 섭취량을 줄이시다' 캠페인을 위한 그래픽 디자인
: 재미있는 그래픽 디자인. 이 그래픽 디자인은 적어도 나에겐 케첩에 대한 역겨운 감정을 불러일으키고 있다. 이 캠페인을 통해 우리는 간접적으로 서양의 음식들이 태국 사람들을 포함한 아시아사람들에게 얼마나 나쁜 영향을 미치는지 알 수 있다.
중식당을 위한 디자인 작품
:중식당에서 사용되는 메뉴판, 냅킨, 테이블 클로즈, 포장용 박스의 통합된 디자인 작품.
인간공학적으로 디자인된 절구
: 절구질을 할 때 전형적인 절구를 손으로 꽉 잡는 것이 쉽지가 않다. 그런 경험을 반영한 디자인인데, 미적으로는 부족해보이지만 절구가 아주 기능적인 제품이라는 점에서 관심이 가는 디자인이다.

While I was visiting the biggest shopping mall, Siam Paragon, Bangkok design festival 2008 was taking place there coincidentally. The exhibition was held in several venues having different topics. Most of things in the exhibition focused on art-based products. It somehow looked like an graduation exhibition of an art school. It was a little bit different from my expectation but I could notice the increasing interest in designing in Thailand. I think Bangkok is a consumption city, which means that it is a very touristic place and tourists spend money buying, eating, drinking and so on. In the context, focus on design could add more values to the identity because, on one hand, design is direct linked to stimulation of consumption. I hope they could invest part of their earnings to the field of design. However, I am concerned whether or not they could keep continuing to have an interest in design due to their political unrest.
방콕의 가장 큰 쇼핑몰 시암 파라곤에 갔을 때, 우연히도 방콕 디자인 페스티발 2008이 열리고 있었다. 그 행사는 서로 다른 토픽을 다루며 여러군데에서 열리고 있었다. 전시되어 있는 대부분의 것들은 아티스틱한 제품들이었다. 마치 아트스쿨의 졸업전시를 보는 듯 했다. 기대와는 달랐지만 태국에서의 디자인에 대한 관심이 높아지는 것을 엿볼 수 있었다. 내가 느낀 방콕은 소비의 도시다. 아주 유명한 관광도시이며 그 곳에 오는 사람들은 먹고 마시고 소비를 한다. 그러한 맥락에서 디자인에 대한 관심은 방콕의 아이텐티티에 더 많은 가치를 부여할 수도 있다. 왜냐하며 한편으론 디자인은 소비의 촉진과 밀접하게 관련되기 때문이다. 관광으로 벌어들인 수익들을 디자인에 더욱 투자하길 바란다. 하지만 그들의 정치적 불안이 디자인에 대한 관심을 꾸준히 끌어갈 수 있을지 의문이다.

Life jackets on a boat to cross the river at Bangkok (in fact, it looks like a life plate rather than a life jacket). The illustration on the life jacket shows clearly and concisely how to use it in case of accident. An interesting thing is that the guy on the illustration seems to stand in not deep but shallow water. It might not be contextually improper because it doesn't present a possible real situation. But I think it would make users feel secured to some extent instead of making them in panic. The similar thing happens in the safety card on the airplane. It shows a scene that passengers are escaping from a crashed plane on the sea by using life jackets and boats, although there has been nobody to survive in any cases of a plane crash on the sea in history (the bottom left one is what we have seen on board while the bottom right one shows what actually happens). After all, design doesn't have to tell the truth only.
방콕의 강을 왔다갔다하는 보트 위의 구명조끼들의 사진이다 (사실 구명조끼라기 보다는 구명용 판떼기라고 해야할 듯). 여튼 구명조끼에 그려진 그림은 사고가 났을 때 어떻게 사용하는지 간결하고 명확하게 보여주고 있다. 재미있는 것은 그 그림 속의 남자가 깊은 물이 아닌 얕은 물에 서 있는 것 같이 보인다는 것. 사용법이 실제 상황을 보여주지 못하고 있기때문에 맥락적으로 부적절해보이지만 내 생각에는 이런 관점의 디자인이 사고가 났을 때 이 구명조끼의 사용자들을 패닉상태에 빠지지 않도록 어느 정도는 안전한 느낌을 줄 수도 있다고 생각한다. 유사한 것이 항공기의 안전 수칙 안내 카드에도 보여진다. 즉, 그 카드에는 바다 위로 추락한 비행기에서 구명조끼를 입고 보트를 타고 탈출하는 승객들의 모습을 보여주는 삽화가 있다. 사실, 항공기 역사에서 바다 위로 추락한 항공 사고들 중에 살아 남은 승객이 현재까지 아무도 없었는데도 말이다. (아래 왼쪽의 사진이 우리가 탑승해서 보는 것들이고 실제 상황을 묘사하면 오른쪽의 사진이 됨). 결국 디자인이 항상 진실만을 보여줄 필요는 없다.

Most of information signs here are related to prohibition: don't ride roller shoes (e.g. Heelys), don't scribble, don't take pictures, and don't sit or stand on it. They looked rustic more or less. On the upper right picture, arrows weren't consistent in their design. Information signs in public places need to be improved. However, all the signs in a resort managed by the Novotel looked familiar: for instance, the yellow wet floor sign looked like quite a western style and I suppose they are all taken from the Western.
여기에 있는 대부분의 인포메이션 사인들은 '금지'를 알리고 있다. 즉, 롤러슈즈(미국 상표명으로는 아마도 힐릭스) 타지마, 낙서하지마, 사진찍지마, 여기에 앉지마 혹은 여기에 올라가지마. 솔직히 다소 촌스러운 그래픽 디자인들이다. 오른쪽 제일 위의 사진을 보면, 화살표가 있는데 무슨 이유인지 서로 다른 화살표 모양이 사용되었다. 태국의 공공장소에서의 인포메이션 사인들은 개선될 필요가 있어 보인다. 반면, 노보텔에 의해서 운영되는 어느 한 리조트에서의 모든 사인 시스템은 친숙해보였다. '바닥 미끄러움'을 알리는 사인은 서양의 것을 그대로 가져온 듯 보인다.

The first three pictures were taken on the metro. An interesting thing is that a sign of a monk is beside those of children, pregnant woman, and elderly people, which means that people are supposed to give their seats to them. It makes sense because monks are very respected in the Thailand. The last one looks quite funny. It was photographed in the taxi. I suppose that Thai people are so sensitive to smell owing to its hot and humid climate that Thai taxi drivers need the sign in their cap. I think this sign needs some public spaces such as metro, bus, and elevator as well. I was nearly vomiting several times because of assholes who farted in those kinds of public places sometimes.
처음 3장의 사진들은 메트로(지하철)에서 찍은 것이다. 흥미로운 것은 스님의 사인이 아동, 임산부, 노인들에게 자리를 양보하라는 사인들 옆에 나란히 있다는 것이다. 스님이라는 신분은 태국에서 매우 존경받는 사람들이기에 이해가 된다. 마지막 사진에 있는 사인은 아주 웃기다. 어느 택시 안에서 본 사인인데, 추측컨데 태국의 덥고 습한 날씨로 인해 태국사람들이 냄새에 아주 민감해서 태국의 택시기사들이 이런 사인을 택시안에 붙인 듯하다. 이런 방귀금지(?) 사인은 지하철, 버스 그리고 특히 엘리베이터와 같은 공공장소들에서 필요하다고 생각한다. 때때로 그러한 공공장소에서 방귀를 끼는 무례한들때문에 거의 토할뻔한적이 몇번이나 있었기에...
