Sometimes, some Korean students ask me a shocking favor. It is both 'please lend me your railway discount card' and 'please lend me your museum card'. If I add further explanation on these two cards, those who hold a railway discount card (about 55 euro per year) can buy any train tickets in the Netherlands with 40% discounted price. Those who have a museum card (about 40 euro per year) can enter most of museums in the Netherlands without paying the entrance fee. The reason why I am upset when this kind of favors are asked is so simple. They came to Delft with aspiration on their future, but they are willing to save 55 euro for discounted train tickets although they spend quite some money in going out for dinner and drinking alcohols. Especially, those who are studying design or architecture keep saying the government has to financially take care of their fields as well as art. However, they are willing to save 40 euro which is supposed to be used for the development of museums. I admire their effort to save their money during study. But let us think again. In order to save the money, actually which they can save by reducing the number of going out for dinner and drinking alcohols, they are willing to commit unlawful acts without restraint. How could they be free from bribe or corruption when they go out with their education, indeed? In addition, it is funny that they address about art, ethics and politics, trying to commit illegal acts. I am afraid in the fear that there are some students who think those who lawfully pay the money silly. Borrowing this sort of cards is a complete different matter from borrowing the mobile phone of your friend. Studying abroad is to learn not only advanced knowledge in the county but also their exemplar ethics and culture.            

가끔 나는 한국 유학생들의 작은(?) 부탁을 받으면 놀랄때가 종종 있다. 그 놀라운 부탁이라는 것은 사실 '철도 할인카드를 빌려달라'와 '뮤지엄카드를 빌려달라' 이 2가지였다. 부연 설명을 하자면, 네덜란드의 철도할인카드는 1년에 55유로를 내는 회원의 경우 네덜란드내에서 모든 열차에 대하여 40%의 할인을 받을 수 있다. 그리고 뮤지엄카드는 가입자의 나이에 따라 금액의 차이가 있지만 대략 1년에 40유로 정도를 내면 네덜란드 거의 모든 뮤지엄을 무료로 입장할 수 있다. 내가 이런 부탁을 받으면 놀라는 이유는 간단하다. 나름 외국의 유명 대학에 미래의 부푼 꿈을 안고 유학을 와서, 철도할인카드의 경우 1년에 8만원도 안하는 돈을 아낄려고 한다. 특히 소위 디자인이나 건축을 하는 친구들의 경우, 그 분야의 발전을 위해 예술 분야의 정부 혹은 기업의 투자에 적극 찬성하고 지지하면서 정작 자신은 뮤지엄 발전에 기여하는 1년에 6만원도 안되는 돈을 아깝다고 생각한다. 그 친구들이 유학비용을 절감하려는 의지는 가상하나... 잘 생각해보자. 외식 한두번 안하고 술 한두번 적게 먹으면 되는, 어떻게 보면 얼마되지 않는 돈을 아끼기위해 '불법'을 당연히 여기는 친구들이 과연 나중에 사회에 나가서 '뇌물'이나 '비리'에 대하여 자유로울 수 있을까? 청운의 꿈을 안고 왔으면 무엇을 하나. 제대로 된 꿈을 이루기보다는 편법을 찾아 이러저리 머리를 굴리는 그 친구들이 예술을 그리고 윤리, 정치를 이야기한다는 것이 참으로 우습다. 정당하게 그 돈을 지불하는 사람들을 오히려 바보 같다고 생각하는 친구들이 있을까봐 무섭다. 이런 종류의 카드를 빌리는 것은 친구의 휴대폰을 빌리는 것과는 전혀 다른 문제다. 유학이라는 것은 그 나라의 앞선 학문을 배우는 것일뿐만 아니라 그 나라의 모범적인 도덕관과 문화를 배우는 것이다.

One of the reasons I don't like the United States is simple....because there is everything. You can buy anything you want to have, make, cook and so forth. An affluent society might end up people being fat or being lazy. In that sense, I like a country where everything is not possible to get. Then, I miss something I can't have there and also I could realize how important something is to me. Many things I can learn in the country. The picture shows some fried Korean street food which we cook with difficulty to find ingredients by ourselves at Copenhagen. To me, the street food that you can easily find in anywhere in South Korea is more than just cheap food on the street, since I came to Holland.

내가 미국을 그다지 좋아하지 않는 이유는 간단하다. 미국에는 모든 것들이 있기때문이다. 여러분이 소유하길 원하고, 만들기 원하고, 요리하길 원하는 모든 것들을 구할 수 있다. 풍요로운 사회는 결국 사람들의 비만과 게으름을 낳을 것 같다. 그런 의미에서, 나는 모든 것을 구할 수 없는 그런 나라가 좋다. 그곳에서 내가 가질 수 없는 것들을 그리워하고 또한 그만큼 얼마나 그 가질 수 없는 것이 소중한지 깨닫는다. 풍요보다 부족함에서 많은 것들을 배운다. 사진은 한국의 튀김 분식이다. 물론 우리가 코펜하겐에서 힘들여 만들었다. 나에게는 적어도, 한국에 가면 어디서나 볼 수 있는 길거리 음식이 단지 길가의 저렴한 먹거리로는 보이지 않는다. 이곳에 온 이후로.
