It was so freezing at Soyang lake in January. There were people on the street who were working for living in the horrible weather. I felt guilty to feel cold and loneliness when I saw them.
Suddenly, a verse from a poem came across my mind... 'Have you ever been as hot to anyone as this briquette once in your life?'
I haven't to both my left mother and my wife next to me.
I was just next to them like a piece of used briquette without the 'being hot'.
The briquette will be ashed to disappear at last but I envied it so much in that morning.
1월의 소양호는 몹시 추웠다. 그런 날씨 속에서도 삶을 위해 목숨을 위해 생계를 위해 일하는 사람들. 그들을 보고 있자면 내가 느끼는 추위와 외로움이 부끄러웠다.
불현듯, 어느 시인의 시구절이 떠오른다. '너는 누구에게 한번이라도 뜨거운 사람이었냐?'
나는 떠나버린 나의 어머니에게도 내 곁에 있는 나의 아내에게도 그러질 못했던 것 같다.
식어버린 연탄마냥 아들이라는 그리고 남편이라는 타이틀로 그렇게 자리만 차지하고 있었던 것 같다.
부서져 재가될 운명의 연탄이지만 그래도 연탄이 부러운 날이었다.

이곳의 겨울은 끔찍하다. 눈이라면 그래도 낭만은 있지, 눈대신 비가 억수로 온다 그리고 바람과 함께. 자전거가 주교통수단이 이곳에서 겨울은 그야 말로 매일 매일이 철인 3종 경기다. 그래도 가끔 파란 하늘을 볼 때면, 그래도 지구는 돈다라는 생각을 한다. 인상파가 네덜란드에서 크게 번성한 것도 어떻게 보면 날씨탓. 디자인도 그런 것 같고. 회색과 어둠 속에서 색과 빛을 얼마나 갈구했을까 여기 살아보지 않고는 상상이 안갈듯.
The winter here is horrible. Snow sounds a bit romantic but it always rains like a crazy dog even with strong wind. Every day is a competition like triathlon to people taking bikes which are an main tranportation here. However I realize the earth is revolving when it is rarely sunny. Prosperity of the impressionism in the Netherlands is attributed to the terrible weather. Supposedly so is design. Can you imagine how they look forward to colors and lights in grey and darkness? Maybe not if you have experienced winter here.

유턴 표시만 있는 곳에서 유턴해야하고 정해진 길로만 다녀야 했던 나의 나라를 떠나 이곳에서 무한의 일탈을 꿈꾼다. 하지만 이미 길들여진 나는 쉽게 일상을 벗어날 만큼 용감하지 않았다.
We should take a U-turn and were supposed to walk on the road which was assigned in my country. Having left there, I dream of deviation from long-standing customs here. However, I am not so brave that the dream comes true; I am still what I was.

At the end of the year, I was with some nice people at Fuegen in Austria. And we shared some stories and there were some happenings as well in the beautiful winter. It's going to stay long in my memory. I wish you who I like and love a Happy 2008.
